From London to Los Angeles and Madras to Manila come insightful new case studies that highlight holistic urban mission
Urbanization has had a profound impact on the church. Urban populations are growing at staggering rates. The vast majority of those living in large cities have not heard the gospel. Poverty and ethnic tension plague today's cities. Our idea of holistic mission undergoes a radical change when it's subjected to the systemic complexity of the city. How can we address the plight of the urban poor in a way that helps them overcome their obstacles to progress beyond meeting their basic needs and come to know Christ? The cases and analyses presented here by leading urban practitioners will trigger insights to help you achieve this goal. This volume focuses on four key areas of holistic ministry in the city: ? Urban mission: in this section, cases from Manila and London focus on the "victims" of the city and the concern for those whose lives have been affected by social, political and economic change. ? Urban ministry: cases from Pietermaritzburg and Los Angeles describe the role of the urban church congregation in transforming the city and nurturing the poor. ? Urban development: studies from Madras and Harare reveal the efforts of Christian relief and development agencies and mission organizations as they responded to the physical and spiritual needs of the poor. ? Urban institutions: this section focuses on organizations that provide training and special skills to guide the efforts of change agents in the city. Special attention is given to modernization, gender and women's voices in urban mission, and glimpses into the future of holistic urban mission. Everyone ministering to the poor in the city will benefit from the cases and analyses in this new book. |
