| Résumé : |
The reader of this illuminating book on Schweitzer as a man and a philosopher is encouraged by the author "to enter into a profound dialogue with Schweitzer: to face with Schweitzer the elemental questions of human existence and to consider appreciatively his answers.” For those unacquainted with Schweitzer’s philosophy, Clark’s volume will serve as a tremendously stimulating introduction; while the Schweitzer enthusiast will find many rewarding new concepts in this study in depth of the man from Lambarene.
The book is a result of six years of intensive research on Schweitzer, both as a gifted human being and as a systematic thinker, and is a probing and detailed analysis of Schweitzer’s ideas. But this volume is no Festschrift of adulation: Clark sees and examines the contradictions in Schweitzer’s thought as well as the excellences. Here is a work that avoids both the uncritical praise and the haughty dismissal which have marked most recently published works on Schweitzer. Clark searches into the reasons and motivations behind the famous ethic of the reverence for life — the spiritual foundation of Schweitzer’s life work — and he seeks to evaluate Schweitzer’s contribution to the quest for an adequate philosophy of civilization. Countless quotations taken from the heart of Schweitzer’s writings are offered in connection with each facet of discussion, and included also is an essay by and articles about Schweitzer hitherto unavailable in the English language. Specific ideas of Schweitzer are presented; the book gives his views on politics, colonization, war, economic matters and other concerns of the time more precisely than has been done previously. |
