| Résumé : |
If you had been outside Anfield Road Chapel, Liverpool, on a spring day in 1905 you would hâve witnessed a quite remarkable sight : crowds were pressing against the chapel doors trying to push their way in. Elderly ladies were to be seen clambering over the railings in their eagerness to reach the chapel doors and, falling on the other people, were being thrown inside by the police like sacks of flour. The reason for their zeal? Their desire to attend a meeting led by Evan Roberts, one of the leading figures in the Welsh Revival of1904-05.
What causes people to act in this way? Indeed, what exactly is revival? In the first of these two studies of the subject, Emyr Roberts looks at the general characteristics of revival, its périls and its fruits. In the second study, R. Geraint Gruffydd turns to a particular revival, the ‘Llangeitho’ Revival of 1762: he examines in depth some of the phenomena associated with it—phenomena which caused the Welsh Methodists to be dubbed ‘Jumpers’—and considers how that great hymn-writer and experienced spiritual leader, William Williams of Pantycelyn, reacted to such emotional outbursts. |
