(4e de couverture) WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD FOR THE CHURCH?
Tragically, in recent years, Christians have become accustomed to revelations of abuse in our churches—from Willow Creek Community Church to Harvest Bible Chapel, from Southern Baptist pastors to Sovereign Grâce churches. The sad truth is that churches of ail shapes and sizes are susceptible to abuse of power, sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse. Abuse can occur when Christians neglect to create a culture of goodness that resists evil and promotes healing, safety, and spiritual growth. Now, respected authors Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer offer a way to move forward. How do we prevent these devastating events from repeating themselves? We need a map to get us where we ought to be as the body of Christ. The key is found in Scripture in a beautiful little Hebrew word that means good. The word is tov. McKnight and Barringer explore the concept of tov, unpacking its richness and how it can help Christians fulfill their true calling as God's image bearers. THE CHURCH CAN BE A PLACE OF GOODNESS AND HEALING. (Jaquette intérieure) A Church Called Tov is first and foremost a book of hope—about a better way, a way we’re calling the Circle of Tov (from the Hebrew word for good). It is a book about what it takes to form a culture of goodness in our churches that will resist abuses of power, promote healing, and eradicate the toxic fallout that infects so many Christian organizations. We need to learn how to prevent incidents of devastating abuse from repeating themselves in other churches or ministries. We need a map to get us from where we are today to where we ought to be as the body of Christ on earth. The map we’re offering is contained in the little Hebrew word tov. That word is found in the creation story in Genesis, where Scripture says, "God saw ail that he had made, and it was very tov.” When everything is spoken and accomplished in creation, when ail the intricate harmonies are formed, God's glory echoes throughout the cosmos: tov me'od. Very good! Very well done! Perfect! Harmony! What a masterpiece! All these English terms, and more, are found in that beautiful word tov. In this book, we focus on forming churches that God can look at and say, "Now that’s tov!" |
