| Résumé : | The creation account in Genesis 1 says both humanity and “living creatures of every kind” were created on the sixth day. The gospel of Mark, reporting Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, says that he “was with the wild beasts”. Yet throughout the history of Christianity, with a few notable exceptions, a firmly human-centered attitude towards creation has ignored this “community of God’s creatures”. Animals are regarded as having value only to the extent that they serve human needs and wishes. But growing awareness of threats to the very sustainability of life on earth from the accelerating extinction of entire species due to human destruction of animal habitats places the issue of humans and animals squarely on the agenda of contemporary Christian theology and ethics. Here two thoughtful ecumenists -a scientist and a theologian - reflect on our relationship to animals in the light of the biblical testimony, an inclusive theology of creation and Christian ethics, as well as ecological concerns and scientific insights into the consciousness, behaviour and suffering of animals. |
