In the opening words of this volume, regeneration is 'the foundation of all religion'. Yet, despite this, the new birth is commonly misunderstood. Being 'born again' has come to mean many different things, from an incommunicable mystical experience to a formal membership in a church body. Even Presidential candidates in the U.S.A. have been rated on whether they claim to be 'born again' or not.
For this reason, as well as others, the republication of Stephen Charnock's masterly study is of first-rate importance. In the course of over 300 pages, he patiently explains what regeneration is, how it takes place, and why it is so urgently necessary. The remainder of this volume contains sermons on God as the Author of Reconciliation and on The Cleansing Virtue of Christ's Blood. Charnock's first editors so valued these studies that they believed Christians would welcome them with 'greedy eyes' ! They are indeed treasures of biblical exposition, for Charnock is always didactic, always thorough, always practical. His treatment of regeneration and related matters in this reprint of volume III of his Works underlines his great powers and value as a sure guide to the new birth and as a fine pastoral theologian. |
