This hymnbook is intended as an aid for "Singing with our Partner Churches" and as such forms part of a movement of worldwide ecumenical partnership which has grown up over the past two decades between Christians in South and North. Making contacts with churches in Asia, Africa and Latin America, exchanging visits with them, singing and worshipping together, sharing our experiences: ail this has now become a normal part of church life for many local congregations in Europe.
Hymns can often convey ecumenical experiences of suffering and pain, joy, trust and hope in a more direct and communicative way than talking or preaching. Music and melodies give us a feeling for the spirituality of people from other parts of the world and open the doors of unfamiliar rooms in other traditions and cultures in an unobtrusive way. No doubt some congregations are not used to singing unknown tunes in a foreign language, and will have to spend some time practising. But those who give it a try will unearth a rich treasure - and one not only of musical wealth. Joining in the hymns of our partner churches means participating in the liveliness of faith as it is found throughout the worldwide Christian community. May using this collection of hymns give many people a new experience of joy in Christian fellowship and in celebrating the love of God together; and may we all be able to experience gatherings at which everyone has something to share - like a new song!
