| Résumé : |
The aim of this volume is to offer a fresh analysis and a comprehensive survey of the rise and spread of Christianity, after its two millennia of development from its origins in the remote Roman provinces of Galilee and Judea to its present position as a worldwide religious, social, and cultural phenomenon. The approach to this task by the authors of this book has been to take into account the social and cultural contexts and dynamics out of which Christianity arose and in which it has continued to develop. This method of analysis seems especially important at a time when historical study takes with new seriousness the way in which sociocultural factors shape human thought, including understandings of the past.
This project begins by examining the dynamic changes taking place within Judaism at the beginning of the Common Era, including the changes in Roman policy toward subject peoples. The cultural influence of Greco-Roman culture and imperial policy on emerging Christianity became a two-way factor when, in the fourth century, this religious movement was accepted by Roman imperial leadership as the basis for reshaping the empire. The process continued down through the Middle Ages as Christianity spread geographically and interchanged intellectually with the culture of the late Roman world. The impact on Christianity of the Renaissance and the forces which underlay the Protestant Reformation are assessed, as are the reactions from two different sources: (1) the Roman Catholic tradition, which sought to conserve its authority; and (2) the widening, liberating intellectual spirit of the Enlightenment. The encounters of Christianity with rationalistic and scientific modes of intellectual analysis are described, together with the resulting impact on philosophy, social theory, art, and literature. The role of Christianity in the development of the social, political, and cultural life of Europe and its aggressive expansion into colonial territories is traced, as are the indigenous religious movements in America. An epilogue sketching the current impact of Christianity in the developing regions of the world brings the book to a conclusion. The contributors to this volume were chosen because of their ability to examine and interpret the history of Christianity in light of the changing social and cultural context. Since the data differ from period to period, each author was free to offer an analysis of his or her period in what seemed an appropriate style. My own earlier writings have focused on the social setting of early Christianity, while Emily Albu Hanawalt has been a leader nationally in Byzantine studies, and Carter Lindberg has contributed to Reformation studies in Europe and America. Jean-Loup Seban, French in birth and training, now brings to his teaching in America the perspectives and insights of his European background. Mark A. Noll has done important work in analyzing not only the mainline churches in America, but independent and evangelical Christian groups as well. Dana Robert’s epilogue gives evidence of her training in the history of worldwide Christianity, demonstrating the impact of Christianity on other cultures and the reciprocal impact on Christianity. - Howard Clark Kee |
