This major Old Testament work is the culmination and fruit of the labors of one of the most erudite Old Testament scholars of our generation, who has been engaged for many years in the interpretation and defense of the Old Testament portion of the Holy Scriptures.
In the first two chapters of The Old Testament: Its Claims and Its Critics, Dr. Allis, under the general heading “The Old Testament from Within,” deals with “its facts and doctrines” and “its literary forms and varied contents.” Then looking at “The Old Testament from Without,” the successes, limitations and the failures of modern archeological research are discussed. There follows a thorough discussion of such critical reconstructions of Old Testament history as Literary Criticism, and the Traditio-historicism, in which their widely differing conclusions are analyzed. Finally the uniqueness of the Old Testament is stressed, and the conclusion that Christianity is the one supernatural religion — distinct from all others, and not to be derived from, nor included in, the various man-made patterns of the ethnic faith — is thoroughly documented. Dr. Allis has placed us under heavy debt with the preparation of this volume. It is a book to restore confidence and composure, to bolster faith, and to give a firm foundation for wavering feet. |
