Résumé : |
The aim of this brief discussion of a vitally important question is to direct the attention of the reader to certain facts which should determine his attitude toward it.
Acceptance of the unity of Isaiah was practically universal among Jews and Christians for twenty-five centuries. This can only mean that the evidence for the unity of the book was regarded as adequate, and also that such a view regarding it was held to be compatible with the nature of prophecy as set forth in the Bible as a whole. Denial of the unity of Isaiah is not due to any new discoveries. It is simply the natural and inevitable result of the acceptance of a modern theory regarding prophecy which minimizes or rejects the element of prediction. This theory regarding prophecy not only destroys the unity of Isaiah; it does much more than this. When consistently applied, it destroys the connection between the "predictions" of the Old Testament and their "fulfilments" in the New, to which the New Testament so often appeals and in which generations of Christians have rejoiced. Yet more, it deprives the Christian of his glorious hopes for the future. For all the "great and exceeding precious promises” of the Bible are predictions; and if these predictions are not a sure word of prophecy, the Christian has no heavenly guidance as looks out upon a world so full of dismay, disaster, and death. |
