Résumé : |
Although the purpose of this introduction is identical to the purpose of other introductions, namely, to provide the resources needed to read the books of the Old Testament wiht understanding, there are several distinctives aspects in its approach :
- The book has an evangelical perspective. - The emphasis is on special introduction (the study of individual books) and not on general introduction. - The interaction with the historical-critical method is done with respect and reflecting a sincere desire to learn what we can from scholars who come to vastly different conclusions than evangelicals do. - The book gives less attention to the history of research than some other introductions and features the high points and representative scholars rather than an exhaustive treatment of past scholarship. - The meaning of each book resides, not in isolation but in a canonical context (in the Bible as a whole). - It probes the meaning of each book in the setting of its culture. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of the Old Testament historiography. In keeping with this broader context, the discussion of each book will focus primarily on three key issues: historical background, literary analysis, and theological message. |
