Résumé : |
A Christian liberal arts education is expensive — and growing more so all the time. Is it really worth the price?
Arthur F. Holmes, who has spent more than twenty years teaching in a private religious college, believes that it is. In The Idea of a Christian College he offers a persuasive rationale for maintaining religiously oriented institutions of higher education. The fundamental purpose of a Christian liberal arts college, Holmes suggests, is to cultivate the creative and active integration of faith and learning. It does so in two distinct ways: educationally, by stressing the integration — instead of the conjunction — of faith and learning; and religiously, by treating all learning as essentially a religious process, rather than accepting the “religious” as just one among many spheres. Without maintaining that a Christian liberal arts college is the only viable form of Christian involvement in higher education, Dr. Holmes does suggest that there is a solid theological and biblical basis for the establishment of uniquely religious institutions. And though his primary emphasis is on the intrinsic values of Christian higher education, he does not neglect its instrumental worth — as preparation both for work and for leisure. Directly responsive to the needs and concerns of college administrators, faculty members, and students, The Idea of a Christian College will serve as well to answer the questions of parents, alumni, and all those who aid in supporting a religious college. |
