Résumé : |
During the past decade the remarkable growth and impact of the evangelical movement has caused many to take notice. Evangelicalism has penetrated and permeated all areas of our society. In this book sociologist Jon Johnston examines the effects this recently acquired popularity is having on the movement.
“Evangelicalism is in serious danger of failing to accomplish its God-ordained mission and of becoming engulfed by the surrounding culture,” says Johnston. He warns of the inevitable tendency of a popular group toward accommodation—a slow, subtle compromise resulting in the loss of that group’s ability to affect society. Johnston examines the values our society holds up as worthwhile: - unrestrained pursuit of pleasure - preoccupation with youthfulness - excessive self-worship - fascination with fame - manipulative attempts at domination - abuse of technology - obsession with fads These values exert a subtle pressure on each of us; they “are rapidly corrupting the life of the nation and, to a shocking degree, the very soul of the evangelical church.” Evangelicals must put worldly culture on the defensive, and Johnston explains how we can do just that. “Compromise is insidious and deadly. To combat it we need biblical teaching. Only as we turn to the authority of the Scripture can we be assured of staying centered in the truth.” This up-to-date analysis of the state of evangelicalism will give the reader a fresh perspective on how evangelicals can live in responsible relationship to society—how they can use their new-found popularity to become an even greater redemptive force in the world, advancing God’s kingdom. |
