Résumé : |
There are two lines of messianic prophecy in the Old Testament. One speaks of the beneficient ministry and atoning death of the Messiah, to be followed by His resurrection, while the other line predicts His reign of righteousness and peace over the whole world. In this book these seemingly conflicting prophecies are seen to harmonise in the person of Jesus Christ.
His first coming is viewed in the light of God's moral government of the world and His purposes of redemption for mankind. Jesus' death on the cross is, therefore, seen not so much as a deliberate act on His part to fulfil prophecy, but as a self-sacrifice, born of love, in obedience to the will of God, the Father. Jesus is also portrayed as the prophet like Moses, speaking God's final word to mankind and foreseeing world-conditions right down to our own day with hitherto unparallelled trouble ahead. This, however, is a sign that His second coming as King of righteousness and peace is also drawing near. The fact that He was a true prophet means that all His claims concerning Himself must also be true. Moreover, prophecy and history, as well as His character and influence, are seen to indicate His Deity, which is shown to be compatible with the divine proclamation: "Hear O Israel, the Lord your God is one", — and much more. |
