What does the Book of Exodus tell us about God?
In a thorough chapter-by-chapter exposition, George Knight approaches this question by examining the text of Exodus from the perspective of one who accepts the Bible’s authority and respects the evidence of biblical research. He is convinced that this portion of the Pentateuch is best understood as a theological essay which reveals the pattern of divine salvation in history. The author of Exodus communicates the theme of revelation through a series of dialogues, between Moses and Pharaoh, Moses and Israel, and Moses and God. These are set within the framework of a narrative which recounts God’s immersion in history. By employing pictorial language, the author of the narrative presents the truth of revelation in a form which has fresh application in every age. We distort the meaning of this Old Testament book if we think of it more as the account of an unfaithful people, than as the history of a faithful God. As the story of liberation accomplished through God’s incarnate love, Exodus has tremendous implications for our own world, in which the plight of oppressed peoples has become so strikingly evident. |
