Among the champions of orthodoxy in the first part of the twentieth century, Dr. J. Gresham Machen was pre-eminent. He is famous as the author of Christianity and Liberalism and the founder of Westminster Theological Seminary. In a line of great American Reformed theologians, he above all stands out as the master of a forceful literary style.
This book consists of a series of broadcast addresses ; while it was being printed, Machen died, in 1937. He did not pretend to originality for the substance of the work, acknowledging his debt to Warfield, the Hodges and Geerhardus Vos. What he attempts is a popular presentation of the Christian Faith. Among the subjects dealt with in The Christian View of Man are the Decrees of God, Predestination and Human Freedom, Providence, Miracles, Creation, the Image of God, the Fall of Man and its Consequences, Original Sin and Sin and Grace. After expressing his belief that 'the Reformed Faith should be preached as well as taught in the class-room, and that the need for the preaching of it is particularly apparent at the present time’, Machen concludes: ‘The author is trying to preach it in this little book, and preach it very specifically to the people of our generation'. |
